In India, Cow is endowed in our rich cultural heritage. It is regarded as embodiment of prosperity and divinity, and highest form of species as the most sanctified in the animal world. The focus on cow protection is about upholding the values of compassion, non-violence, and respect for life that are fundamental in Hindu philosophy.
While India is renowned for worshiping cow, traces of cow as sacred animals can be found in other parts of the world.
The prominent Chinese painter, Li Keran, in his painting “Herdboy and Ox” depicted a boy leaning on a cow, symbolizing quieting of the mind and self-control and in Zen tradition, ox serves as the metaphor for mind. In ancient Greek, the bull was often depicted as a symbol of power, virility, and strength. Bull and lion were imprinted on the coins introduced by King Croesus of Lydia. In ancient Egypt, cows and bulls held significant cultural and religious importance. Apis was the sacred bull worshipped in the ancient Egypt. Bat was the cow goddess worshipped in the ancient Egypt and was a symbol of fertility and abundance. Zoroastrians considered cows as the beneficial creations of Ahura Mazda, the universe’s supreme being.
